SUMMER YEARNING: WINTER MULLING OVER

Ages ago in London I bought  a second-hand book of multi-faith  prayers. As I recall, one prayer hinged on the word ‘temperate’ and talked with God about temperate winds and temperate weather. Please bless us, I hear it saying, with temperate conditions of heat and cold; light and dark; wind and breeze; wet and dry. Extremes are hard to live with, it seemed to imply.

In this hot summer of 2026 I have been wondering, is a yearning love of the temperate something to be valued and passed on? Or even, is being lovingly temperate a facet of the nature of God?  I think it often is – but possibly not always, because that might start us on a slippery slope towards making God out of our own images, likes/dislikes and even physiologies.

Probably ‘Temperateness’ is a bit like ‘Mildness’.  We are rightly wary of the ‘Gentle Jesus meek and mild’ sort of idea but good mildness is strong. Inevitably Christmas will come and we shall find ourselves singing ‘mild he lays his glory by…’.

How, I wonder, may this hot summer’s yearning for the ‘temperate’ link up with our future winter mulling over of ‘mildness’?

Keep cool!
