PUSHING UP DAISIES!

Some time ago now I was for several years the South East Regional Manager for a housing standards organisation. There were 30-40 in my group spread over Berkshire, London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

Mostly we got along pretty well both in our jobs and more personally. Every now and again a business contact or someone’s family member would die. We developed the custom of talking about being dead and buried as ‘pushing up daisies’. These were friendly, relaxed, informal, not solemn or embarrassing sorts of communication. Other times we might be talking about some improvement we’d like to see made in our job and someone would say wistfully, ‘we’ll all be pushing up daisies before that happens’.

Recently I was sitting out on my patio looking idly at the lawn and a patch of some 50 or so daisies.  I thought about my old colleagues, most of them older than me and probably pushing up daisies by now. Then my mind turned to other groups of people I have known – streets of neighbours, classes of students, church congregations etc. To all of us sooner or later comes the time for ‘pushing up daisies’. Sure, there are times for formal, faith-based language about God and Heaven and Eternity  but informal and ordinary language about such things as ‘pushing up daisies’ has a key role too.
