Thought for the Month -
September 2026

SEEING THE SIGHTS!

I was about 8-10 when I had my first pair of glasses, round and wirey! Nothing major wrong but long-sightedness needed a bit of correction. Then every few years I would go along for a check-up or a larger frame until years later multi- focal day came, which was a bit of a milestone. Now, this month, September 2026, is cataract removal time so that will be something new again!

We who were brought up on the hymn ‘All things bright and beautiful’ will remember the line ‘He gave us eyes to see them and lips that we might tell…..’ Praise, thankfulness and enjoyment are a sort of ‘holy’ response to the blessings of sight, touch, hearing and other human senses – not pious holy but joyful holy.

A while ago, one Sunday after church someone mentioned Peter White the broadcaster who does R4 slots with blind and partially-sighted people in mind, saying how well he always seems to do it. Churches are usually good at praying for the medical world but prayer leaders sometimes miss out on others such as broadcasters who spread related good and informative news.

Last thought. Faith can be a sort of lens through which we view the various aspects of our lives – home, family, school, social, financial, etc. Perhaps I should polish up my faith-based lenses while the medics are sorting out my cataracts!
