FEAR AND PEACE

In my last year of Primary School we learnt by heart John’s Gospel ch 14 which starts “Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid”. Some years later my mother asked me, “What are you preaching about on Sunday evening?” and went on to suggest that “What makes you afraid?” might be a good topic. I can’t remember taking her up on it. But do we ever act on our parents’ best advice?

Nowadays we seem to get only a few minutes into a radio or TV news programme before they are telling us about something that makes us feel anxious, if not downright afraid, for ourselves and for younger family and friends, and for the future world.

At such times I often find myself recalling the hymn, “Have faith in God my heart, trust and be unafraid, God will fulfil in every part each promise he has made.” A key promise of God is in Jesus’ words later in John 14, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. I do not so much see God as fixing the world’s politics as in steadying our hearts and souls so that, unafraid, we may each be a living sign of God’s peace.
