A PRESIDENT AND A KING
​
Mr Trump wants “to make America great again”. That’s fine but what sort of greatness does he have in mind for his country and for himself as leader?
​
A former colleague of mine was visiting the quiet town of Wantage in the south of England. In the central square, shining in the autumn sunshine, was a memorial to one of England’s most respected Kings, Alfred the Great (reigned 871-886}. The inscription said:
Alfred Found Learning Dead
And He Restored It.
Education Neglected
And He Revived It.
The Laws Powerless
And He Gave Them Force.
The Church Debased
And He Raised It.
The Land Ravaged By a Fearful Enemy
From Which He Delivered It.
I wonder how Mr Trump’s notions of greatness would compare with Alfred ’s record of restoring learning, reviving education, implementing good laws, raising the spiritual quality of religions, and delivering ravaged lands from their enemies.
More mischieviously, I wonder how their cake-making and cake-burning skills might compare!
